It's situated in front of the Boehmerwald, northern to Linz, from the German-Austrian state boundary to the national boundary between Upper and Lower Austria (Waldviertel). The Muehlviertel represents a closed plateau-landscape (600 to 700 m), where some wooded mountains rise to approximately 1,000 m. A set of hollow-valleys turn in steep, romantic valleys of the Danube.

The Muehlviertel is rich in art, particularly in churches. Many of them were built in the romanic epoch and have partially gotic style. Also castles and churches prove the art of the Renaissance and the baroque. Many castles and castle ruins control the varied landscape. Alternative: Summer description
